In my opinion Substance 3D Designer based material workflow, purely based on nodes offers far more fidelity and flexibility to that of scanning. Hand crafting details this way will make them pixel perfect, but also offer parameters to be added for later customization.

Two years ago my Yoyogi Station Unreal demo became a kind of viral hit and was featured in 80.LV and other CG related media.
I agree with Japanese sentiment that past things reflect something human in us.
